If you’ve got G.A.S. then you may be eating some of the best, or worst, BBQ that Kansas City has to offer. The Gastronomical Appreciation Society (G.A.S.) are the unofficial critics of barbecue joints all over the Kansas City area. For ten years, the group of amateur critics meet up at local Q joints for lunch once a month. Everything from brisket to beans is scored on a 1 to 10 scale.
It all started April 1997 at Hayward’s BBQ in Shawnee, KS. The core of G.A.S. includes Jeff Anderson, Jeffrey Couch, Dave Ellis, and Rick Moehring. All four are certified BBQ judges for the Kansas City BBQ Society competition circuit. Several other friends join the crew at times on their gastric adventures. Their Web site lists the now 122 journeys the crew has taken to dozens of BBQ joints all around the Kansas City area. Every journey is documented with an overall score, individual menu item scores, and anecdotes of their meal. The best of ten years of G.A.S. is listed below.
| Beans | Fiorella’s Jack Stack - (Martin City) | 9.8 |
| Sandwich/Meat | Laura’s BBQ and Stuff | 9.4 |
| Ribs | Wabash | 9.4 |
| Fries | LT’s (out of business) | 8.9 |
| Sauce | Wabash | 9.1 |
| Atmosphere | The Filling Station | 9.7 |
| Portions | Woodyard | 9.6 |
| Value | Woodyard | 9.5 |
| Service | Fiorella’s Jack Stack - (Martin City) | 9.5 |
| Overall Rating | LC’s | 9.1 |
G.A.S. is pretty well known in the BBQ sub-culture of Kansas City. The G.A.S. crew have a quiet underground following that check in each month to see what the latest is in KC BBQ eateries.
